Active Learning In Engineering Education (ALIEN)

Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education Project 586297/2017

Project ALIEN aims to improve the quality of higher education by providing more motivating, stimulating, and effective learning contexts based on active learning and problem-based learning that prepare students for their professional life through the development of industry desired competences. ALIEN aims to establish active learning and problem-based learning as strategic educational approaches in engineering higher education. ALIEN introduces a learning intervention that addresses all challenges that inhibit the wide deployment of active and problem-based in engineering higher education.

  • Infrastructure: ALIEN develops physical PBL labs at 12 partner universities in Asia and more specifically in Malaysia, Pakistan, Nepal, Vietnam, and Cambodia
  • Digital services: ALIEN develops digital learning platform based that promotes student collaboration in active and problem-based learning contexts towards developing problem-solving capacity
  • Instructor training and community building: ALIEN delivers instructor training for facilitating the adoption of active and problem-based learning in classrooms. It further builds builds a community of educators, students, and other stakeholders for capacity building on the use of active and problem-based learning.

The project is funded by the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education Programme of the European Commission. It is being implemented in 5 European and 5 Asian countries with the participation of 17 universities from Greece, Portugal, the UK, Estonia, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal, and Pakistan.
